See Why Staycations Have Become More Popular

Wait, what exactly is a staycation? Simply put, a staycation is a short holiday close to home. For example, you might take a few days off work around a weekend and go for a micro-escape to a nearby town or city. Or head off into the countryside for a two-day hike.

Why have they become popular? The rising price of jet fuel is one reason. Airlines are adding higher fuel surcharges to airfares due to volatile global oil prices. This has made flying more expensive and less affordable for many people.

On top of that, the cost of living has risen, so cheaper holidays are what everyone wants right now. Also, taking a shorter holiday from work means requesting fewer leave days from your boss, and they are much more likely to say yes and grant your annual leave.

So, where to go and what to do on a staycation?

That very much depends on your budget. In summertime, two or three nights in a nearby seaside town might be just up your alley. Staying in a holiday rental will keep costs down, and activities such as walking along the beach are both relaxing and usually cost little.

For something more authentic and connected with nature, camping is a great option. Grab a tent, sleeping bag, and stock up on some camping grub for the weekend! Camping is almost always cheaper than conventional accommodation, and if you have children, they will have an absolute blast.

Finally, there is the stay-at-home staycation. While this choice may seem a little dull, it can actually be quite fun. Make a list of the sightseeing spots in your city that are popular with international tourists but that you don’t visit often. Then, be a ‘tourist’ in your own city, enjoy the sights, and have a mini break. Try out a new restaurant, take a sightseeing bus tour, and maybe visit a local museum or art gallery.

Whatever you decide to do, a staycation can be the perfect change of scenery you need to recharge your batteries.
